Andrea Marshall

Dr. Andrea Marshall, a marine conservation biologist specialized in the ecology of manta rays. She co-founded the Marine Megafauna Foundation. Young, she learned how to dive and developed a passion for marine photography. As the first person to produce a PhD thesis on manta ray conservation biology, she pioneered the field. To identify individuals, she used her professional diving and underwater photography skills to characterize their unique marking patterns. In 2009, she had uncovered a new species of manta ray called Manta Alfredi. Today, she is the lead author of the IUCN’s Red List assessments for species of manta rays. The Natural World documentary “Andrea: Queen of Mantas” is dedicated to her exceptional work with manta rays. She was also named a National Geographic “Emerging Explorer” for her research.
