Damien Cole
In 2015, Damien Cole made a difficult decision to leave the mining industry he worked in, through his 20’s; to do a course in Environmental Science, and get heavily involved with local community groups. Little did he know that the more he got involved, the more work he found needed to be done.
Damien’s stand as an Independent candidate in the 2018 Victorian election turned a lot of heads. His undeterred passion to make a difference helped introduce a policy that places restrictions on large scale housing projects.
Damien is now leading activist, and SurfRider’s National Campaign Director; that isn’t afraid to surf the roughest waves; in the water or out in the world. He fought hard with Torquay’s coastal community to stop the oil drilling in the Great Australian Bight. 57 communities ‘paddled out’ to the waves to fight for this Bight on the 23rd of November, and won.
Since then, Damien plays an active part in a start-up that produces sustainable surfboards made from balsa wood. He continues to be an integral part of SurfRider, which is working to encourage coastal communities to become more ‘Ocean Friendly’.
