Founder of The Only Butt Campaign

plastic in the ocean starts in our streets” Josie Jones said.

Josephine (Josie) Jones, is a graphic designer, a marine photographer, and an ocean advocate passionate about creating zero waste solutions. For four years, from 2002 to 2006, she lived on the small French-Polynesian island of Tahiti. There, she took conscious of the impact everyone could have on the environment, especially, in managing waste to avoid marine litter. When she came back to Rye in the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria, Australia; she decided to pick up each plastic debris she could see on the beach. Over the last ten years, Josie Jones took several initiatives to raise awareness of littering. In 2011, she first created “The One Tonne Challenge” to gather the local’s effort to collect trash from the foreshore. Recently, she launched “The Only Butt campaign” always using her graphic design talents to help the cause. Her approach consists of educating people, working with the Council but also with the local community. Together, they have introduced ashtrays and hand bins on beaches.

She has received media attention and many awards for her work. Among them the Dame Phyllis Frost Award in 2016 and the Litter Prevention prize from Keep Victoria Beautiful in 2017. She was also elected Australia Day Citizen of the Year 2019, and she received the 2020 Victoria Local Hero Award in the Australian of the Year Awards.
